Guys, i never wanted to take money from anybody for my work. And i always shared my work and code with PS3 developers and community. Recently i was working on bringing Linux to PS3 back, as you all know, unfortunately SONY managed to stop me. Many of you offered donations to help me continue my work and i always declined as you know. But now i really need your help and support in this fight with SONY. You know…when this all first started, I was pretty hot under the collar, but ultimately, cooler heads must prevail, and once i calmed down a bit (after a month or so, lol) i started thinking; why would Sony go through all this mess? The lawsuits are expensive in and of themselves, especially in terms of pr, and the campaigns to deal with THAT have to be a nightmare on the checkbook. so why do it? this is one possible explanation that i have not seen suggested anywhere. As I sit here and type this on my fiance’s computer, i can look over to the far wall and see a Cisco/LinkSYS WRT54G wireless router that I have installed custom firmware on. The only reason I am able to have custom firmware on this particular hardware is because Cisco/LinkSYS put Linux on this machine, and, as anyone who knows anything about Linux knows, Linux is licensed under a fairly strict usage policy (the GNU license, I believe), one of the core tenets of which is that if a person or corporation makes their own source code based upon linux for profit, they must release a copy of that source code to the general public in some fashion. It does not make concessions for potential damage to the companies profits or the usage of any hardware based around Linux Now, Cisco/LinkSYS did not do this at first, however a hacker whose name I don’t have available off-hand happened to be digging through the firmware out of pure curiousity and found evidence that the firmware for said router was, in fact, based upon Linux and sued to get the source code released.
Now, before you read on, just let sink in a moment.
Now, I lack the tools or the technical know-how to prove or disprove whether the Playstation 3′s firmware is based upon Linux Kernel, but someone like graf_chokolo or GeoHot would likely have no problem doing so if they were so inclined.
However, bear in mind that this is all purely conjecture.

It would be awesome if that was the case and Sony was forced to release the PS3 source code. I would be amazed if Sony built any of the sensitive functions of the PS3 engine on any open source software registered under a licensing platform that could force them to release the PS3 source code, they may be dumb but I really doubt that even Sony is that dumb. Another scenario is that Sony slipped in some software based on open source licensed software with functions unrelated to sensitive information like encryption. If that is the case they will get caught no matter how many hackers they sue. It wouldn’t be the first time a large company illegally used open source software for profit without following the license terms but they would likely be the biggest. I am sure they would still find some way of sweeping it under the rug if that was the case though, most likely by using some money to buy a broom and a rug,
Sony’s SDK is based off of the GNU GPL toolchain. So that means there entire software suite has GNU GPL based coding. So yes they are violating the GNU GPL. They have done this extensively in the past with the PS2. Shadows of the colossus is a perfect example of this.
But the trick here is, the only way to get the SDK legally to even attempt to figure that out you either have to A) Buy the SDK and devkits and B) Sign up to be an official developer. So if you pirated the SDK, you can’t exactly sue them over GNU GPL violations as they would be able to counter sue on copyright claims.
I think you may be able to tell the difference by reverse engineering the PS3. But I’m not 100% sure. I’m sure an experienced developer in the know relating to the GNU GPL toolchain would be able to see everything. Would a developer sue Sony over a violation? Well no, at least it hasn’t happened yet. Could it happen in the future? Time will tell.
that’s how they figured it out with the linksys router i mentioned…someone reverse engineered the firmware. i figured since this fellow has done basically that with the ps3, he would be able to prove it already, which would be an interesting thing to bring to the table.
to put this in another way, sony does NOT want people to find out if they did something like this, not only will it tarnish their already spotty reputation(and as an off note, what the heck were they thinking with that kevin butler character?¬_¬# ), it will also open the ps3 up for homebrew in a way that they wont be able to shut it down again without a major firmware rewrite

There isn’t one yet. You may not be completely out of luck though.
If you’re comfortable with hardware hacking then try progskeet to reflash your firmware/dual boot.
Alternatively a method’s been released to obtain the new keys, it’s just a matter of time waiting for someone to get them and release them – then a new CFW is immanent.

Seriouly this is just a cash cow scam, Geohot showed us the proof he was being sued and somehow fiddled his legal bill to be $500k (more like it was $100k max and the rest he pocketed with the help of his over priced scam artist lawyers) but he still showed us he was indeed being sued.
Graf has yet to show even one scrap of evidence he is being sued, heck has not even proven he has been to court as of to date, even a tweet or facebook status would have been enough to convince us he actually was in court on said date. Worse still he has gone silent in the scene leading us to belive he has pocket well over $100k by now in donations and has left the scene to enjoy his new playboy lifestyle.
